This is an original 1855 black and white in-text wood engraving of the Great Pyramid of Cholula, also referred to as Tlachihualtepetl in Mexico. This pyramid measures 1,300 by 1,300 feet. The first archaeological study of this ancient pyramid occurred in 1881, when Swiss archaeologist Adolph Bandelier took an interest in the site. Various burials were found surrounding the pyramid. Further excavations were performed here at later dates.
