This is an original 1857 monochrome in-text wood engraving of Annie M. Andrews, a nurse whose valiant efforts to help out at a hospital in Norfolk, Virginia, were more depressing than anything else. Wracked with yellow fever, the sick and dying lay numerous among the understaffed nurses. Annie would often tend to multiple patients at once, caring for them until they died, invariably with her hands on their foreheads.
