1858 Lithograph Roman de la Rose Book Medieval Costume - ORIGINAL DRD1

This is an original 1858 hand-colored lithograph of figures from the famous medieval French poem of courtly love -- Roman de la Rose or the Romance of the Rose. Written in two stages by Guillaume de Lorris and Jean de Meun, this illuminated manuscript dates from about 1480. (MS Harl. No. 4425). (The figure in riding dress, no. 3, is from another manuscript of the same period, Royal MS. Reg. 19, C. VIII). These images provide excellent representations of medieval costumes. The image of a medieval organ in the commentary is from a painting by Lucas van Leyden.

Period Paper has obtained a rare and exceptional collection of original hand-colored lithographs of the dress and decorative ornamentation of the Middle Ages. Created in 1858, these highly collectible images are beautifully produced and are exceptionally well-preserved. Each image comes with a full two-page (one page, double-sided) descriptive commentary with additional hand-colored lithograph images including stunning initial caps. (There is no printing on the reverse of the main image.) These images are commonly reproduced, but the ones we are offering are the original 1858 lithographs, not current reproductions, copies, or digital prints. This 153+ year old Item is rated Very Fine. No creases. No natural defects. No surface rub. No tears. No water damage. The images of the costumed figures and the ornamental border are graded Very Fine+++, however there are some foxing marks on the commentary which lower the overall grade of this item to Very Fine --please see all images.
