This is an original 1872 black and white wood engraving of a sketch by English novelist William Makepeace Thackeray (1811-1863) entitled "Poinsinet in Disguise." Poinsinet was a short, proud, and foolish man. He was so annoying that his friends regularly played cruel tricks on him, such as getting him to believe he killed a man, hiring a magician to make Poinsinet believe he had become invisible (which was a huge hit at parties), and generally making a huge fool of him. Not that he really realized it. Here, in disguise, one can only assume that his friends were yet again exploiting him in some way or another for their own amusement.
