This is an original 1872 black and white wood engraving of a sketch by English novelist William Makepeace Thackeray (1811-1863) entitled "A Puzzle for the Devil." It depicts the climactic moment when Mr. Gamouge, who made a deal with the devil in exchange for his remaining years, tricks him into an ultimatum--As the devil was bound to fulfill his every wish, Gamouge forces him to choose between canceling the pact or spending every minute with his insufferable wife. Needless to say, the devil spent little time time musing, and immediately released Gamouge.
