This is an original 1875 black and white woodcut of Jean le Rond d'Alembert, a French Enlightenment philosopher who co-edited L'Encyclopédie with Denis Diderot. He was also a music theorist and physicist, among other things, and lent his name to a formula which derives solutions to the wave equation.
