This is an original 1875 monochrome woodcut of "Tree of Triste Noche." This tree, a huge and gnarled cypress, is held as a monument to Spanish conquest. It marks the point where Hernán Cortés and his army of Spanish conquistadors paused on the night of June 30, 1520 on their escape from the capital of Tenochtitlan. Following the death of Montezuma, the Aztec King whom the Spanish were holding hostage, Cortes and his men were forced to fight their way out of the capital at great cost in both lives and teasure. Roughly a year later, the Spanish would complete their conquest of the indigenous peoples of Mexico.
