This is an original 1878? black and white steel engraving of the Turkish assault on the Bulgarian held Shipka Pass. Determined to break the Russian siege of Plevna, Turkish soldiers under the command of Suleiman Pasha marched to the town's aid. However, Bulgarian volunteers, though heinously outnumbered, were determined to help the Russians, and held the pass for three days, resorting to throwing rocks and trees down the slopes of the pass once their ammunition ran low. Russian reinforcements arrived just in time to relieve the exhausted Bulgarians, the pass held, and the siege of Plevna continued.
