This is an original 1878 black and white wood engraving of a scene from Varanasi, India.The city is located on the bank of the river Ganges. The river begins in the western Himalayas and travels southeast through the Gangetic Plain and into the Bay of Bengal. Interestingly, it is the most populated river basin in the world, serving 1,000 inhabitants per square mile, and over 400 million people total.
