This is an original 1880 black and white wood engraving of The Assassination of the Duc de Guise which was originally a painting created by Hippolyte (Paul) Delaroche (1797-1856) who was a French painter. He was known for his straightforward technique and dramatic compositions. Delaroche often painted characters from ancient history, founders of Christianity, and figures from closer to his own time.

The story goes that in 1588 King Henri III summoned his rival, Duc de Guise, to his chambers at the Château de Blois and then had him murdered.
