This is an original 1884 monochrome halftone print that depicts the entry of Emperor Charles V into Antwerp, Belgium.

Emperor Charles V. (1500-1558) ruled over Spain and the Holy Roman Emperor, and spent the majority of his reign in conflict with France. Those Italian Wars, as they would come to be known, were a military success for the Empire, although poor Charles was more interested in just settling down quietly than raining down terror upon his enemies. The other main event for which he is most well known is the calling of the Council of Trent, a move which effectively began the Counter-Reformation Movement. Unlike most rulers of the time, whose reigns generally ended with death and bloodshed, Charles V simply retired. The Empire went to his younger brother Ferdinand, and Spain came under the rule of his son, Philip II.
