This is an original 1887 black and white wood engraving of the Bixa orellana, also known as Achiote or Aploppas, that is native to the tropical regions of North and South America. Achiote paste is also commonly used in Yucatán, Oaxacan, and Belizean cuisine. The plant has also been traditionally used by Native American Indians to make body paint.
