This is a rare original 1888 color chromolithograph which feature several scenes from the lives of the French peasantry during the 17th century. Although they were hard workers who ultimately earned very little for their troubles, they still found the time to enjoy dances, festivals, and ferociously celebrated joyful occasions such as weddings.

Key Elements in Each Panel

Top - Children mark notches in wood to keep track of how many baskets of grapes are collected - A harvester, bent at the waist, brandishes his sickle beside a baler, holding her skirt.

Middle - A bride is escorted to the chapel by her friends and family. She wears her hair loose and flowing down her back.

Bottom - A hearty country dance, which allows the peasant to take a well-earned break from the hardships of everyday life.
