This is an original 1890 black and white relief line-block print depicting the fall and death of Phaëton, who asked his father, the sun god, to drive his chariot. However, upon losing control of the horse-drawn chariot through Africa, the earth was set ablaze in its destructive path; thus turning the fertile land into a scorched desert. Phaëton was then struck down with a bolt of lightning by Zeus in an effort to prevent further disaster. Interestingly, the term "phaeton" was coined as one who drives recklessly or at dangerous speeds, as well as one who may set the world on fire, which was likely why many of the "racing-type" vehicles of the early 1900s were named phaetons. Later, however, the term became so widely used in the automobile industry that it no longer held its origin and accuracy.
