"Aleppo (Halep). Ancient city of Aleppo. The Chapel of St. Anthony of Padua."

This is an original 1893 etching (individually hand-painted) of The Chapel of St. Anthony of Padua.

Please refer to listed second image for further information on the Chapel of St. Anthony of Padua.

Aleppo is the largest city in Syria, as well as in the Levant. It is also one of the oldest perpetually populated cities in the world. Excavations and carbon dating indicate it has been inhabited since about the 11th millennium BC, making it the oldest known human occupied colony in the world. The city is known for its commercial and military competency. It is strategically located between the Mediterranean Sea and Mesopotamia, making it ideal for the trade industry. Aleppo began to decline around 1869, when the Suez Canal was constructed, which diverted trading to sea. Due to continual invasions and political uncertainty, Aleppo lost its valuable railway to Turkey, as well as its access to the sea from the World War I era though the 1940s. However, presently, Aleppo is resurrecting its return to notoriety as it remains unique in its architecture and identity based upon its distinguishing history and geographic locale.

Period Paper is pleased to offer an extraordinary and rare collection of original etchings of the Holy Land including Syria, Cyprus and Egypt. Created to document the history of the Franciscan missions in the Holy Land, these etchings provide an excellent historic visual record of the landscape, architecture, and people of Palestine and the Middle East. Each individually hand-painted etching (from a photograph) is mounted on a thick fiber board with a stunning decorative design lithographed in rich gold gilt. These museum-quality etchings are impossible to find anywhere.

Accompanying each original etching is a digital print (for reference) of the description of the image in English, Latin, French, Italian, and German. (Please see both images.)
