"Said (Sidon vetus) Ancient Sidonia. Interior of the Church of the Most Holy Annunciation."

This is an original 1893 etching (individually hand-painted) of the Interior of the Church of the Most Holy Annunciation in the ancient city of Sidon, which is now Lebanon. The ancient city of Sidon has been reported to have been inhabited as far back as the Neolithic period, and may have been the oldest Phoenician city. It has been said that members of this colony traveled south to discover the city of Tyre, which turned into Sidon's greatest competitor, with both cities claiming to be the "Mother City."

Period Paper is pleased to offer an extraordinary and rare collection of original etchings of the Holy Land including Syria, Cyprus and Egypt. Created to document the history of the Franciscan missions in the Holy Land, these etchings provide an excellent historic visual record of the landscape, architecture, and people of Palestine and the Middle East. Each individually hand-painted etching (from a photograph) is mounted on a thick fiber board with a stunning decorative design lithographed in rich gold gilt. These museum-quality etchings are impossible to find anywhere.

Accompanying each original etching is a digital print (for reference) of the description of the image in English, Latin, French, Italian, and German. (Please see both images.)
