This is an original 1895 black and white steel engraving of a portrait of Laura Ross Wolcott, who came to Milwaukee a year after graduating from the Women's Medical College of Pennsylvania. Wolcott was the first female doctor in the state of Wisconsin and was one of the first licensed women doctors in the United States. In 1867, Wolcott was finally admitted into the Milwaukee City Medical Society. That same year, she became a commissioner to the 1889 World's Fair in Paris. Two years later, Wolcott helped organize a women's suffrage movement in Milwaukee, which consequently led to the founding of the Wisconsin Woman's Suffrage Association, of which Wolcott later became president.
