This is an original 1895 black and white steel engraving of a portrait of Matthew Keenan, who came to Milwaukee in 1837. He first worked as a dry goods store clerk in a shop owned by William Brown Jr., which was later named Hayden and Keenan. In 1852, Keenan, who was a seasoned and practicing lawyer, was elected City Court clerk. Keenan later became recognized as the father of modern water works legislation in the area. In fact, the present water tower was erected by Keenan. During the 1870s through the 1890s, he reigned as a high ranking executive at the Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company. Keenan also served as the vice-president of the Milwaukee Chamber of Commerce for a time. He was later affiliated with the construction of the Milwaukee Public Library and the preservation of the Soldiers' Home in Milwaukee.
