This is an original 1897 black and white in-text wood engraving of an ukiyo-e or wood block print illustrating a scene from "The Two Brothers of the House of Soga" more commonly known as Soga Monogatari.

This story's motif was a very popular one in the Edo Period of Japan and is still often told today in kabuki style. The story of filial piety, revenge and duty is often referred to as a sogamono styled performance.
