This is an original 1898 halftone print of "Defoe in the Pillory." The scene depicted here shows Daniel Defoe being put in the pillory for his libel "The Shortest Way with the Dissenters." He had to then pay a fine and find sureties for his good behavior for seven years after that.

Period Paper is pleased to offer a collection of photogravures and halftone prints of the paintings of the most notable British artists from William Hogarth to the later Victorian painters. This large collection includes examples, from various schools of painting, of landscape, portrait, genre, and allegorical paintings. A brief, one-page descriptive text about the painting and the artist accompanies each item. Please see both images.
