This is an original 1900 black and white photogravure of James II of England and Ireland who was also known as James VII of Scotland. After the English Restoration and the death of King Charles II, there was no apparent heir to the throne as Charles II left no direct heirs, but many illegitimate children. In this event, the throne went to his brother, James II, who like his father and brother before him would be mired in rebellions and exiles until he was deposed in the Glorious Revolution four years after he became king.
