This is an original 1901 black and white halftone print of the scene of the Crucifixion in the Passion Play of Oberammergau, Germany. The scenes include Christ followed by Simon of Cyrene bearing his cross, Christ wearing the Crown of Thorns, the Crucifixion, and Christ and Mary Magdalen on the resurrection morning.
This city is famous for its Passion Play that has been faithfully performed every ten years since 1634 as a promise to God after being spared from the Bubonic Plague. The range and scope of this performance is monumental. Every member of the Bavarian community participates, 2,000 of which are actors. Since the 17th Century the play has only been canceled twice and postponed once.
