This is an original 1903 sepia photogravure of a portrait by Corneille de Lyons which depicts Marguerite de Valois. Not only was she the consort of King Henry II of Navarre, she was also sister to King François I of France. She was a noted author and humanist, once described by Samuel Putnam as the "First Modern Woman."
