This is an original 1905 black and white halftone print of the Rialto Bridge located on the Grand Canal in Venice, Italy. Originally, the bridge served as a border divide between San Polo and San Marco. It is the oldest bridge that spans the canal. Previously, a pontoon bridge was erected here until it was replaced by a wooden bridge, which stood until its collapse. However, after its destruction such noteworthy figures as Michelangelo, Palladio, Vignola and Sansovino designed plans for a future bridge. The stone bridge that remains today was designed by architect Antonio da Ponte, who completed the structure in 1591. Due to its prominent arch, many critics estimated its peril; however, it continues to stand strong today and is an iconic example of Venetian architecture.
