This is an original 1906 halftone print of a portrait done by Paulus Moreelse, simply entitled "A Lady." Born in Utrecht, the Netherlands, during 1571, he was a member of the painters' Guild of Saint Luke, and enjoyed fame as a portrait painter during his lifetime. With regards to this piece, the woman is sporting a style which was extremely popular in Holland and the Northern parts of Europe. It featured trends like puffed sleeves ,which were slashed to reveal the colorful material beneath, and a general plumping of women's figures due to the voluminous amounts of fabric used in the clothing's production. Interestingly, ruff collars remained popular long after they had gone out of style in other parts of Europe.
