This is an original 1906 halftone print of the famous Lorelei rock near Sankt Goarshausen in Germany. It marks the narrowest point of the Rhine between the North Sea and Switzerland, and is the focus of many folklore tales because of its eerie murmuring and whispering. Although its most likely that the sound is caused by caves and small waterfalls inside the rock, the most popular myth holds that a young maiden named Lorelei, having been jilted by her lover, was going to be put to death for seducing and killing innocent men. Before the scheduled execution she begged to climb this rock and look over the Rhineland one last time. Once standing at the top, she threw herself into the murky depths of the river below and to this day, the rock continues to whisper her name.
