This is an original 1907 color print of a watercolor by English artist Herbert Marshall which depicts the magnificent residence of French merchant Jacques Coeur. He was made Master of the Mint in 1436 by King Charles VII, a high honor. Although a brilliant merchant, he created a monopoly on a variety of different trade goods, and became so wealthy that nobleman were coming to him for money instead of the Crown. As a result, he had a lot of enemies. His downfall occurred after the death of the King's mistress, Agnès, was pinned on him, and all of his assets were seized. There was no proof, but enough people in power owed him money that none was needed. His fabulous properties are located all over the French countryside, yet this one was his crown jewel, his favorite residence.
