"Politics."

This is an original 1914 halftone print of a painting by A. B. Frost. In this image we see 19th century grassroot politics in action--a gathering of folks in front of a quaint village post office avidly examining the latest political news from the newspaper just delivered by the horse-drawn U.S. Mail stagecoach in the background. All of the typical village folk seem to be represented here--the blacksmith, a farmer, a lady with a little girl. Perhaps the man with the jug is the saloon keeper, and possibly the old man on crutches approaching the group is a Civil War veteran.

A. B. Frost

(1851-1928) Arthur B. Frost is perhaps best known for his illustrations for the Uncle Remus tales by Joel Chandler Harris, as well as for realistic hunting, shooting, fishing and golfing prints. Much of his work depicted scenes of rural America and these were often done with a humorous touch. His finely drawn and detailed illustrations appeared in many books and publications, including Harper's Weekly, Scribner's, and Life magazines.
