This is an original 1914 black and white halftone print of the ancient Roman Cloaca Maxima in Italy, which is recognized as one of the oldest sewage systems in the world. This public work is thought to have been erected around 600 BC under the commission of Tarquinius Priscus, King of Rome. The great engineering feat was executed by Etruscan engineers, as well as by poor Roman natives. The underground civil engineering is said to have been crafted by Tarquinius Superbus, the seventh and last King of Rome.
