This is an original 1914 black and white halftone print of "The Archduchess Isabel," from the painting by Rubens. This is a portrait of Isabella Clara of Austria, daughter of Leopold V, Archduke of Austria and his wife Claudia de' Medici; member of the House of Habsburg, Archduchess of Austria, and Duchess of Mantua and Monferrato as wife of Charles III, Duke of Mantua and Monferrato. The marriage was an important strategic alliance between the Gonzaga and Habsburg families. Isabella's husband Charles III died suddenly in 1665 and she assumed the regency on behalf of her son, Charles IV. In 1671, by order of the Emperor, she entered a convent where she remained throughout the rest of her life, dying in 1685.
