This is an original 1920 sepia halftone print of the incredible fortress church of Saintes-Maries in Carmague, France. It was supposedly one of the first sights which the Three Marys (Mary Salome, Mary Magdalene, and Mary Jacobe) saw upon arriving in Gaul from the Middle East. An interesting fact about the town of Sainte-Maries is that it serves as the center of a yearly pilgrimage which the Roma (Gypsy) people make to honor Saint Sarah, who was supposedly the dark-skinned servant of the Three Marys and is now their patron saint.
