This is an original 1922 sepia rotogravure of the German cruiser Mainz being sunk by British shells during the Battle of Heligoland. The bottom image depicts German shells falling on the H. M. S. Lion. The caption for the image writes, "German shells falling about H. M. S. Lion shortly before the Queen Mary, another British battleship, blew up. Jutland was the greatest naval battle of the war, and though both sides claimed the advantage the German ships retreated. The battle was fought off Jutland on May 31, 1916."
