This is an original 1924 black and white halftone print of a statue of San Martín in Lima, Peru. Joséé de San Martín, originally from Argentina, was a key military leader in South America's war for independence from the Spanish in the early 1800s. After liberating Lima from the Spanish in 1821, San Martín was declared the "Protector of Peru" and became Peru's first president.
