This is an original 1929 halftone print of a side portrait of Josef Hlávka, who was an architect and philanthropist of the Czech Republic. Hlávka served as the primary architect for the Opera House in Vienna, the Eastern Catholic Church in Chernivtsi, Ukraine, a maternal hospital in Prague, as well as various apartment complexes in Vienna. Additionally, he aided greatly in the fiduciary efforts for the founding of the Czech Academy of Science and the Arts, where he served as first president. Furthermore, after the disastrous floods of 1890 in Prague, which significantly damaged the historic Charles Bridge, Hlávka financially supported its renovation. He also founded a dormitory for poor yet gifted students in Prague. Today, UNESCO has declared the 100th anniversary of the death of Hlávka as a World Cultural Anniversary.
