This is an original 1934 halftone print of Sens Cathedral in Sens, Burgundy, France. The roof of the cathedral is pictured in the background with a rooftop of a house in the town shown in the foreground. It was one of the earliest and largest gothic buildings erected in France and the choir of the cathedral was begun in 1140. Sens was a place of considerable importance in the 12th century AD.

Period Paper has obtained this exclusive collection of rare halftone prints from a journey taken by Philip Gibbs, who traveled through Switzerland, France, Hungary, Austria, Italy and the Saar during the spring and summer months of 1934. The illustrations were crafted by E. Lander, who portrayed scenes in Moret, Vezelay, Paris, Sens, Stuttgart, Avallon and others. Additional illustrations included that of a labor camp in Munich, cityscapes, churches and cathedrals, as well as scenes of the rise of the malicious German military prior to the onset of World War II.
