This is an original 1934 halftone print of Vézelay, Francer. This ancient and easily defendable hill town is famous for the Vézelay Abbey. In the 9th century AD Benedictine monks were given land to build their monastery, and the Basilica of St Magdelene was built in the 11th century AD. It is now designated as an UNESCO World Heritage site.

Period Paper has obtained this exclusive collection of rare halftone prints from a journey taken by Philip Gibbs, who traveled through Switzerland, France, Hungary, Austria, Italy and the Saar during the spring and summer months of 1934. The illustrations were crafted by E. Lander, who portrayed scenes in Moret, Vezelay, Paris, Sens, Stuttgart, Avallon and others. Additional illustrations included that of a labor camp in Munich, cityscapes, churches and cathedrals, as well as scenes of the rise of the malicious German military prior to the onset of World War II.
