This is an original 1938 black and white photogravure of a painting by Sienan artist Giovanni di Paolo which depicts St. John the Baptist going off into the wilderness. The Sienans used a different style of painting than their Florentine counterparts, with more rigid figures and less focus on the natural and more on the mystical.
