1938 Photogravure Piero Francesca Flagellation Whip Christ Linear XAF4

This is an original 1938 black and white photogravure of of an unusual painting by Piero della Francesco which depicts the flagellation of Christ. Although it uses great linear perspective, its a little unclear as to why there are three men chatting in the courtyard, and why they are so much nearer to the viewer than Christ, something was was exceedingly rare in the majority of Christian art of this nature. There are multiple theories surrounding the identities of these men, however no one will ever be entirely sure for certain who they are.
