This is an original 1938 halftone print of two Japanese screens titled, "The Three Laughers," and "Trial of Strength With a Demon." Both were completed in the 18th century. "The Three Laughers" shows Hui Yüan, Tao Yüan-ming, and Liu Hsiu-ching. Hui Yüan was a fourth century priest and vowed to never cross the Hu Ch'i bridge from his temple on Mount Lu. When his friends were visiting, they were so enthralled in their conversation that Hui Yüan ended up crossing the bridge with them. They all stopped upon realizing what they had done, and laughed. The "Trial of Strength with a Demon" shows Kintoki testing his strength with the demon, and the man in the center is Watanabe no Tsuna. The old man behind him is either Raiko or Minamoto no Yorimitsu.

Period Paper is pleased to present a collection of halftone prints featuring Japanese art screens and sliding panels, or fusuma. The original pieces were displayed at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Massachusetts, during the winter of 1935-1936, in order to acquaint the public with Japanese artwork. The exhibition offered pieces from the Ashikaga, Momoyama, Tokugawa and Meiji periods, and featured numerous artists from each time frame. It is an interesting collection and depicts the transformation of Japanese artwork from the 15th to the 20th century.
