Marquet, Albert
Albert Marquet (27 March 1875-14 June 1947) was born at Bordeaux, and moved to Paris in 1890. In Paris he became a student at École des Arts Décoratifs, then at the Beaux-Arts in Gustave Moreau's Studio, where he was introduced and began to associate with Matisse. After Moreau's death, he continued his studies, working with Matisse in the Louvre. Once financially able, Marquet became an enthusiastic traveler, seeking-out areas with water, a recurring subject in his work. His travels included the shores of the Mediterranean, in Marocco in 1912 with Matisse and Camoin, in 1920 in Algiers, in 1922 Tunis, at Sidi Bou Saïd in 1928 in Egypt. Upon his return to Paris, he began painting the Paris quaysides he had long admired. He remained a lifelong friend with Matisse, dying unexpectedly and suddenly from a gall bladder attack and cancer on 14 June 1947 in Paris.
