This is an original 1939 halftone print of Bernini's inspiration for St. Peter's Square, drawn in 1650. The idea was that the man drawn would represent the Universal Church with arms outstretched to hold mankind. The Vatican City was established in 1929 and is the world's smallest state, and has a population of 800. Vatican City is home to St. Peter's Basilica, the Sistine Chapel, and the Apostolic Palace. The church is the largest of all Christian churches and is said to be the burial site of Saint Peter. Michelangelo helped with the architecture of the building, and designed the dome.
