This is an original 1941 color print of a Grumman F4F-3 Wildcat. The caption begins, "Mission of this navy fighter is to escort bombers like the SBC-4 and TBD-1 from its own carrier, to destroy enemy bombers with its four machine guns and little grenadelike fragmentation bombs tucked under its wings..." The Wildcat was introduced to both the United States Navy and the British Royal Navy in 1940, and was the only effective fighter plane used by the United States in the early years of the war.
