This is an original 1941 halftone print of the Old San Jose Church of Panama. The church holds the golden altar, made of carved wood and covered in gold sheet. The caption writes, "Built by the Augustinian fathers, it contained the famed golden altar that the fathers hastily painted to resemble woodwork before the onslaught of Morgan's pirates. The altar is presumably made of Inca gold, for the isthmus used to be the favorite overland route for the treasure trains coming up from Peru and discharging at Porto Bello on the Caribbean until Morgan razed the town and made off with fabulous booty before capturing Panama."
