This is an original 1944 color print of covered bullboats. The boats were built by killing a number of bull buffalo, skinning them, and stretching their hides around the body of a small wagon or framework. The hides needed to shrink until dry, and then they could be filled with goods to be floated across the river.

This image is from a series originally created by Alfred J. Miller in 1837. Miller traveled with the American Fur Company's supply caravan from Independence, Missouri to the Green River in Wyoming. He was the first artist to travel that far west on the alternative route through central Wyoming to the Oregon, Mormon and California trails. His sketches were done very quickly on the spot, and embraced the lifestyle and scenery of "The Great American Desert," called so not because it was barren, but because it was seemingly endless.
