This is a small original 1945 color print from a set depicting the Japanese occupation of the Philippines during World War II. Trudle Zipper was a Viennese dancer, teacher, ballet producer and costume designer. She worked in Vienna and Salzburg, taught in London, and then accepted a job offer to the University of Manila for one term. Five months later, the Third Reich invaded Austria, and Zipper did not want to return to her home country. Trudle and her husband, Herbert, produced the first ballets of the Philippines with Filipino dancers, and Herbert was a conductor of the Manila Symphony Orchestra, but after Japanese occupation of the city, the couple found themselves hiding from the public eye. Throughout the weeks of fighting, all of their personal property was destroyed and the only thing left were these sketches and a bundle of clothing. The sketches were brought to America by Claude Buss, the author of "Report from Manila," when he returned to the states from the Philippines in May of 1945.

Shown in this particular image is of a Japanese sentry dressed in camouflage. The caption writes, "During air raids we were stopped and searched by these camouflaged sentries who reminded one of the famous scene in Macbeth." The city was finally liberated in the Battle of Manila in 1945 in a complete bloodbath. The one-month battle saw the deaths of 100,000 civilians. Please note the dimensions of this print.
