This is an original 1945 halftone print of the F. F. I. riding along the Canebiere. The F. F. I. stands for French Forces of the Interior and referred to the French resistance fighters of World War II. General Patch said that the help given by the F. F. I. after the United States troops landed on the Mediterranean was equal to four full divisions, and said that the fast advance of the Allies would have been impossible without them. Also shown is a building on fire at Fort Pharo after an attack. The caption writes, "Fort Pharo, guarding one entrance to the Port of Marseilles from the hill in background was one of the last armed centers to fall. It is shown here under attack on the 27th. A French rifleman is climbing into a window on the left."
"Conad History" (Continental Advance) was created to preserve the history of the United States Army supply forces, and to provide a basis for future studies by the United States War Department. The book covered the continental advance, communications zones, the European theater of operations, and the United States Army during 1944 and 1945. The Conad staff began in Africa and traveled to central Europe where they finished.
