This is an original 1950 color print ad for the Container Corporation of America that features a quotation from English essayist, poet, and playwright Joseph Addison (1672-1719) about education that reads; "Education is a companion which no misfortune can depress, no crime can destroy, no enemy can alienate, no despotism can enslave. At home a friend, abroad an introduction; in solitude a solace and in society an ornament. It chastens vice, it guides virtue, it gives, at once, grace and government to genius. Without it, what is man? A splendid slave, a reasoning savage." The ad also features an illustration by Leo Lionni (1910-1999) that portrays a child doing his schoolwork.

Leonard Lionni

Leonard Lionni (1910-1999) was an author and illustrator known for his various childrenÕs books, including The Alphabet Tree, Inch by Inch, Swimmy, Frederick, and Little Blue and Little Yellow. Lionni emigrated from Italy to the United States in 1939, and served as the art director for Fortune magazine from 1948 to 1960. In 1960, he moved back to Italy, and created over forty childrenÕs books. Lionni received the American Institute of Graphic Arts gold medal in 1984, and was awarded four times as the Caldecott Honor winner.
