This is an original 1950 black and white photogravure of the ruins of the Abbey of St. Wandrille (also known as the Fontenelle Abbey) which can be found in the commune of Saint-Wandrille-Rancon in the region of Normandy, France. This Benedictine monastery was founded in the 7th century by Saint Wandrille.

Normandy is the historical region corresponding to the former Duchy of Normandy in northern France. It lies along the English Channel and is traditionally divided into Upper and Lower Normandy. In World War II, the D-Day landings occurred along the Normandy beaches and that event began the lengthy Battle of Normandy which many believe was the turning point of that war.
