Georges Rouault

Georges Rouault (1871-1958) was a native of Belleville, France. He received his formal art education at the Ecole des Beaux Arts under Symbolist painter Gustave Moreau. Rouault also studied art at the Louvre in Paris. He was most recognized for his unique expressionism stylistics. Rouault was also a draughtsman and artist, who specialized in printmaking, lithography, etchings, woodcuts and book illustrations. His works primarily centered on prostitution, tragicomic clowns and religious subjects. Rouault's art has been exhibited at the Pierre Matisse Gallery in New York City, as well as at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. In 1902, he became the cofounder of the Salon d'Automne, and in 1903, Rouault served as the first curator of the Musée Moreau in Paris. In 1939, after the unexpected death of his art dealer, Vollard, Rouault received more than 400 of his own paintings from Vollard's estate, 315 of which Rouault destroyed.
