This is an original 1956 color print of The People of Madrid Attacked by the Mamelukes the Second of May 1808. Murat's cavalry was attacked by the people of Madrid in the Peurta del Sol. This image commemorates the terrible incidents which stained the streets of Madrid with blood when the people rose against Murat's soldiers, which Goya has witnessed himself.
